PAUSD Welcomes New Director and Coordinators of Special Education

Looking ahead to the forthcoming school year, Superintendent Glenn “Max” McGee is pleased to announce several important personnel changes to the Special Education Department that will improve the already high standards of care, education, and support for students with special needs and their families.  “As a district, we are committed to inclusionary practices, to being fully compliant with state and federal laws regarding Special Education services, and to assure all students have access to the programs, services and supports aligned with his or her individualized education plan.

PAUSD Welcomes Interim Principals to Palo Verde and Jordan

Today Dr. McGee tapped two PAUSD assistant principals to serve as interim principals at Palo Verde Elementary and Jordan Middle schools. Tonya Bailey, who served as the assistant principal at Terman last year, brings a proven record of success at the elementary level to her new position as interim at Palo Verde Elementary School. Likewise, veteran teacher and administrator, Tom Jacoubowsky, is highly regarded for his people skills, commitment to children, and proven professional accomplishments during his fourteen years at Gunn as he was selected to be the interim principal of Jordan Middle School.

Paly Mathematics Team – Wins Int'l Mathematical Modeling Competition

Competing against seventeen teams from ten countries in a week-long competition focused on using all types of mathematics to solve a real-world problem brought out the best in the four?person team of student mathematicians from Palo Alto High School (Paly).  After earning a spot in this ultra?competitive contest by winning the top award in the 17th Annual International High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) earlier this year, team members Kathryn Li, Allison Zhang, Eric Foster, and Andrew Lee worked with Team Advisor and Palo Alto High Mathematics Instructional Supervisor Radu Toma to prepare for this competition.  Their perseverance, ingenuity, and hard work paid off.  All international teams received a common problem in mid-April and had one month in which to participate.  During that time teams chose five (5) consecutive days to work together on the problem.  The Palo Alto High Team worked on their problem April 19-23.  

Minority Achievement and Talent Development Advisory Committee – Final Report

After devoting six months to determining the root causes of the significant disparities in academic performance and disproportional enrollment in advanced classes between historically underrepresented groups of low-resourced and minority students and their peers, the Minority Achievement and Talent Development (MATD) Advisory Committee released its thorough report.  At the May 26 Board of Education meeting, members of the committee, which includes parents, teachers, administrators, classified staff, and community members, presented their findings based on research and best practices in other districts; examination of historical district data; a series of local focus groups and individual interviews with students, parents, and teachers; and over 800 survey responses from students, parents, faculty and staff, administrators, and community members.

Board Policy Review Committee (BPRC) – Accepting Applications for Parent Representative for the 2015-2016 School Year

The Board Policy Review Committee (BPRC) has been established as a Board of Education committee to assist the Board in its thinking about District policies.  The scope of the work involves policies in operations, new mandates and policies derived from State of California legislation, and policy needs for Palo Alto Unified School District.

District Announces New Pre-K Principal

Superintendent Glenn “Max” McGee is pleased to announce the appointment of the new Pre-K Principal, Dawn Yoshinaga, to oversee the broad variety of successful early child development programs provided by PAUSD.  The appointment will be presented to the Board of Education at the May 26, 2015, Board meeting.  Ms. Yoshinaga replaces Mrs. Sharon Keplinger who is retiring at the end of the 2014-2015 school year after over 20 years of service.
